Serbian coach Milorad Pavic was appointed as manager of Benfica this season following an impressive spell in Bilbao, and he promptly delivered the club a 21st Portuguese title. With much the same squad as the previous season, Benfica were propelled to this championship success on the back of 24 League goals between them by Moinhos and Nené and just two defeats over the campaign. The Eagles trailed FC Porto by 3 points at the midpoint of the season but overhauled them with a strong run in the spring.

Progress in Europe was ended at the semi-final stage of the Cup Winners Cup by Dutch club PSV Eindhoven.
