After a twelve year wait since winning a first League of Ireland Premier Division title, 2005 was the year that Cork City finally added a second. It could have hardly been a closer run title race though. City and Derry were impossible to separate all season and went into a last round fixture against each other with Derry leading by a single point -and the home side needing nothing less than a win to leapfrog them in the table. The Rebel Army started strongly and had several chances to take the lead before leading scorer John O’Flynn finally put them ahead in the first half. A nervy period ensued until City’s dominance brought a second and ultimately title-winning goal by Liam Kearney.
