Nottingham Forest began what was the inaugural season of the Premier League promisingly with a home victory over Liverpool, but this would be a difficult season for the club that would end in relegation and a return to the second tier for the first time since the 1970s. It would also mark the end of the long and successful reign of the club’s iconic manager Brian Clough.

There was talent in the squad with players of the caliber of Steve Stone, Nigel Clough, Stuart Pearce, Mark Crossley, and a young Roy Keane, but the departed stars Teddy Sheringham and Des Walker proved impossible to replace.
