Stoke City FC 1983 - 85 Away Retro Football Shirt
Stoke City’s mid-80s history was a rather mixed story. Euphoria from the 1983-84 campaign when Division 1 safety was assured turned into despair the following season as the club dropped out of the top flight.
Bill Asprey came in as manager for the second half of the 83-84 season and changed both the team’s style and its fortunes. The veteran Alan Hudson returned and helped the team assemble a great late-season run, rounded off with a fine 4-0 win on the last day against Wolves which confirmed their place in the top flight.
There were few points, wins, or goals the following season, but there were high points with the wins against high-flying Manchester United, Arsenal, and Sheffield Wednesday to enjoy. Sammy McIlroy excelled once again in midfield and was deservedly voted ‘Player of the Season’.
