American soccer was enjoying a very high profile in 1976 thanks to the success of the North American Soccer League, but that success had not extended as far as the US national team.

Former 1960s international Walt Chyzowych had the role of Director of Coaching at the U.S. Soccer Federation, and he also took on the role of coach this year, but the qualification tournament with Canada and Mexico for the 1978 World Cup did not work out successfully. The highlight of the year was a 2-0 home win over Canada thanks to goals by Miro Ryes and Juli Veee.
