While the 1960s represented a remarkable golden era for Dunfermline Athletic, the following decade was unfortunately a lot less kind and by the start of the 1980s the Fife club was mired in the lower reaches of Scotland's third tier.

The arrival of former player Jim Leishman as manager in 1982 would bring a dramatic turnaround in the club's fortunes however. Appointed at the age of just 28, his youth and boundless enthusiasm inspired the club to begin its rise back to the top of the Scottish game.

The restoration of Dunfermline's fortunes began in the 1985-86 season with Leishman's free-scoring team winning the Division 2 title ahead of Queen of the South. This attack-minded side captained by Bobby Robertson and anchored by Norrie McCathie scored 91 goals over the course of the season and the entertaining football they served up helped bring the crowds flooding back to East End Park.
