Almost immediately following their Coppa Italia win against Torino, Roma's squad boarded a plane for the US to take part in the inaugural Trans-Atlantic Cup. The Italians had been booked to take part in the four team competition alongside Manchester City, Vancouver Whitecaps and the hosts, New York Cosmos.

Their first game against the Whitecaps ended in a 1-1 draw and three days later Roma went down to a thrilling 5-3 defeat against the Cosmos, the eventual tournament winners. One other friendly game was scheduled before Roma were due to fly home and resulted in a 2-1 defeat against the Toronto Blizzard.
