Based in the Boston area, the Tea Men's name referenced both the historical Boston Tea Party and tea company Lipton, the club's owners. Successfully debuting in NASL in 1978, the club won its division to reach the play-offs and matched that achievement again in 1980. There was a strong British influence on their signings policy with Gerry Daly, Kevin Keelan, and most notably Mick Flanagan all becoming Tea Men stand-outs. Financial problems brought down the club, and it was relocated and renamed in 1980 as the Jacksonville Tea Men.
