The names trip off the tongue: Puskás, Kocsis, Bozsik, Hidegkuti, Czibor, Grosics; all part of the Mighty Magyars team that was the strongest international team on the planet between 1950 and 1954. Olympic champions in 1952, destroyer of England in 1953 both home and away and unbeaten in 31 internationals going back four years by the start of the 1954 World Cup; victory in the tournament for Hungary was seen as inevitable. Against all odds they controversially lost in the Final to a West German team they had crushed earlier in the same tournament. The 1956 uprising against the Soviet-backed government meant a defence of their Olympic title was impossible and their 1958 World Cup hopes were weakened by their top stars escaping to the west, then ended after a play-off against Wales.
