The departure of Alex Ferguson as manager towards the end of 1986 brought to a close the most successful era in Aberdeen's history. Ian Porterfield arrived as new manager with the task of leading the club into a new and uncertain era, a challenge made more difficult by the financial might of a revitalised Rangers. League form slumped with a disappointing fourth placed finish in the 1986-87 season, but this was still a strong and talented squad featuring a host of internationals including Jim Bett, Peter Nicholas and Robert Connor. Still going strong too was that brilliant defensive trio of Jim Leighton, Alex McLeish and Willie Miller. The closest the Dons got to silverware in 1987 came late in the year when they played out a memorable League Cup Final against Rangers. A thrilling game ended 3-3 with the Glasgow side winning on penalties.
