Blessed with successive generations of talented teams during the 50s and 60s, the Hungary footballer production line ground to a halt during the 1970s and has never truly got going since. 1966 heroes Ferenc Bene and Florian Albert were still going strong as Hungary undertook the twin challenge of the 1972 Olympics and European Nations Cup. The former ended with defeat in the Final to Poland and the disappointment of only a silver medal, while semi-final defeat to Hungary's old enemy, the Soviet Union, in the Nations Cup is the closest the Magyars have come to a major Final in the decades since. Qualification for the 1978 World Cup brought renewed optimism with a new group of players that included talents like Balint, Varady, Torocsik and Tibor Nyilasi, but all this tournament offered Hungary was a tough group, three sobering defeats and an early flight home.
