Newly appointed West Bromwich Albion manager Vic Buckingham enjoyed a miraculous debut season in 1953-54 as his new charges came close to becoming the first 20th century club to win the mythical League and Cup double. Ultimately the Baggies won the FA Cup but narrowly missed out on the League title. Tied with Black Country neighbours Wolves with just a handful of games remaining, injuries hit West Brom’s pursuit hard and they collected just a single point from their final three fixtures. Some redemption followed with s 3-2 win over Preston in the Cup Final, Brian Griffin scoring a late winner to add to the two scored by the club’s prolific centre forward Ronnie Allen.
