It took until 1992 for the break up of the Soviet Union to be formalised in a footballing sense and Russia starting to play as an independent nation. Their first international fixture took place in Moscow during August of that year and brought a 2-0 win over Mexico, the start of coach Pavel Sadyrin?s preparation for the forthcoming World Cup qualifying campaign.

Qualification was seen as vital to establish the new country?s credentials on the international scene and Russia was fortunate to be drawn in a modest group alongside Greece, Iceland, Hungary and Luxembourg.

This hybrid Russian team which still included a number of players now eligible to play for the Ukraine eased its way to a place at the 1994 tournament in the United States with six wins and two draws.
