When the German city Chemnitz was renamed as Karl-Marx Stadt in 1953, its football team followed suit and played under this name until reverting to Chemnitzer FC upon German reunification in 1990. Karl-Marx Stadt entered the DDR-Oberliga in 1962 and with the exception of their surprise title win in 1967, performances were steady if unspectacular. The 1976-77 season was typical of the era ending with a 9th placed mid-table finish, albeit just a point above the relegation zone. In the absence of any significant players or DDR internationals in their squad, the star of Karl-Marx Stadt was undoubtedly the club's wonderfully distinctive pale blue and white shirt.
