The Chilean team that successfully qualified for the 1974 World Cup in West Germany had much to live up to. Its predecessors had enjoyed some success, most notably a decade or so earlier in the 1962 World Cup on home soil when that Chilean team had finished in an impressive third place. But by 1974 most of the 60s stars like Leonel Sánchez and Pedro Araya had retired from national duty and a new generation of players including Elias Figueroa and Carlos Caszely was still to reach its peak. A narrow defeat to the hosts West Germany was followed by draws against East Germany and Australia meaning Chile exited in the group stages. Caszely also had the unwelcome distinction of being the first player to be red carded at a World Cup.
