World Cup qualification was the sole focus for Australia throughout the 1970s, so much so that the national team chose not to participate in the inaugural Oceanic Nations Cup in 1973. Reaching those first World Cup Finals became an Australian obsession after having narrowly missed out at the final play-off stage for both the 1966 and 1970 tournaments. In the run up to the 1974 tournament Australia this time faced South Korea for the right to travel to West Germany and this play-off brought a welcome happy ending. The Australian team of amateurs and part-timers then acquitted themselves well in Germany despite failing to score a goal in their three group games. For goalscorers this was a decade in which Australia was typically quite blessed. Ray Beartz and Attilia Abonyi netted regularly from the late 60s through to the mid 70s and the prolific John Kosmina would become their star forward of the next generation.
