While Iceland came no closer to qualifying for a major international tournament than they had in previous decades, the 80s was a time that saw significant development in the game as the country's top players started to move abroad and play at a higher level. Legendary striker Arnor Gudjohnsen led the way and enjoyed great success playing in Belgium during these years, as did midfielder Runar Kristinsson who would go on to become Iceland's record appearance maker. A number of internationals ended up in England too like midfielders Siggi Jonsson and Gudni Bergsson plus keeper Birkir Kristinsson. The national team would gradually start to see a benefit from these better standards in the years ahead.
