The Austrian coach and originator of the catenaccio defensive system, Karl Rappan, was in charge of Switzerland for his fourth spell as the 1960s began. He would successfully take the national team to qualification for the 1962 World Cup in Chile, mirroring his earlier achievements in leading them to both the 1938 and 1954 tournaments. The 1962 campaign was a disappointment though with three group stage defeats and early elimination for a team that struggled for goals. Captain and main striker Charles Antenen was there but approaching veteran status. Neither was he as effective without his former national team partner Josef Hügi whose career had come to an end a couple of years earlier. Former Italy coach Alberto Foni took Switzerland to the next World Cup in England, but a squad of limited capability again plunged out of the tournament at the earliest opportunity. As was the case four years earlier, all their three group stage games ended in defeat.
