The Saints kicked off the 1988-89 season missing a familiar face in long-serving defender Billy Abercrombie who moved on in the close season after a dozen years spent with the Paisley club.

St Mirren completed their Premier League season in 7th place, never in any danger of relegation but a distance away from European qualification. This was a team with established quality including keeper Campbell Money and midfielder Paul Lambert, though goals were less easy to come by.

Former Celtic forward Paul Chalmers finished as top scorer with 12 in all competitions, but the mid-season return to the club of the winger Peter Weir after 8 years away added attacking threat and his 7 goals in the second half of the season were useful.
