The excitement and drama of the late 1970s at West Bromwich Albion gave way to a more subdued spell during the early years of the 1980s, typically personified by the 1982-83 season under Scottish manager Ron Wylie. The Baggies started the season strongly with seven wins from their opening eleven League games, but ultimately the loss of quality players like Bryan Robson and Remi Moses was telling and West Brom fell away to finish in an unremarkable 11th place in the Division 1 table. This was a team with a strong Dutch flavour in midfield through Romeo Zondervan and Martin Jol, while Gary Owen and Derek Statham also represented influential members of the squad. Cyrille Regis continued to score important goals, but the club's most prolific marksman was Garry Thompson who arrived midway through the season from Coventry City.
