A footballing nation that lived in the shadows for much of the twentieth century, Finland suffered from a consistent failure to qualify for any major summer tournament - a problem that continues to this day. Even winning a single World Cup qualifying match proved beyond them in the 1950s and closer to home they did little more than make up the numbers in the regular Nordic Football Championship events with Norway, Sweden and Denmark. The highlight of this era for the Finnish game was a battling performance by their Olympic team on home soil at the 1952 Helsinki games. Austria eventually won their first round tie as expected, but were made to battle all the way for their 4-3 win. Olof Stolpe and his two goals did at least turn him into his country's first footballing hero.
