This small sovereign state is situated in South America, plays its football with the Caribbean nations and has historically supplied its best players to a major European national team: Suriname's history is unusually diverse. It was footballers of Surinamese descent like Gullit, Rijkaard, Davids, Winter, Seedorf and Kluivert that made the Dutch national team such a force to be reckoned with in the 1980s and 1990s, this at a time when the Surinamese national team struggled to make its own way in the game. It began the 1980s on the back of a win in the CFU Caribbean Championship of 1978 and a runners up spot the following year, but an opportunity to play on their biggest stage yet was missed in 1980. When the USA football team withdrew as part of the boycott of the Moscow Olympics, this gave Suriname the opportunity to step in as replacements. The chance was passed over with the nation preferring to follow America's political lead instead.
