The last great Austrian team before the nation's game fell into decline, the 1982 squad featured the same backbone of top class players in Prohaska, Krankl, Schachner, Pezzey and Jara who had made their names at the 1978 World Cup in Argentina. The manner in which qualification for the second round in Spain was achieved brought little to cheer for Austria because of the notorious non-aggression pact of Gijón - when the Austrians and the West Germans appeared to play out a result that allowed both to progress at Algeria's expense. France proved too strong in the next round anyway as Austria's campaign ground to a halt.
