For all the domestic excellence demonstrated by Boca Juniors throughout the 1960s with their title wins in 1962, 1964, 1965 and 1969; there was a sense of disappointment that the Buenos Aires giants failed to impose themselves on the continent's emerging Copa de Libertadores competition during these same years. A wonderful team featuring keeper Antonio Roma, left back Silvio Marzolini, Brazilian international centre half Orlando and long-serving midfield leader Antonio Rattin had threatened to become Argentina's first South American champions when the club reached the 1963 Libertadores Final. Unfortunate to come up against Pelé's Santos, Boca narrowly lost out and then had to sit back and watch as their compatriots Independiente, Racing Club and Estudiantes de La Plata dominated the competition for the rest of the decade.
