A decade that started in shame and ended in triumph. Argentina failed to qualify at all for the 1970 World Cup following a disastrous qualifying campaign that resulted in Peru travelling to Mexico instead. Argentina were back for the 1974 tournament but made little impression. This was a team that had yet not shed the negative and aggressive approach that had been a hallmark of their 1960s style. It took the arrival of the more progressive César Luis Menotti as coach to turn around the fortunes of the Albicelestes as they prepared to host the 1978 tournament. A squad rooted in defensive certainty with Fillol in goal and captain Passarella in central defence had great talent all over the pitch: the clever midfield playmaking of Ardiles, the trickery and power of winger Daniel Bertoni and of course the goals of Mario Kempes, a striker whose clever movement and composed finishing opposing defences found impossible to counter.
