Winning one British Home Championship and sharing the title on two further occasions did little to make up for a disappointing decade for Scottish football. The nation's first steps in the World Cup were disastrous. Having earned the right to travel to the 1950 tournament, Scotland's Football Association preferred to withdraw because the team had not qualified in the specific manner they had demanded. Scotland did attend the 1954 competition but took a squad of just 13 of the permitted 22 players as a cost cutting measure. The 7-0 defeat to holder Uruguay summed up the poverty of their tournament. The 1958 competition in Sweden was little different and once again ended in group stage elimination. This continual failure jarred when there was real playing talent on show during these years: Alex Scott, Eddie Turnbull, Tommy Docherty, Bobby Collins, Eric Caldow and Dave Mackay all would have walked into the first teams of most other major nations.
