The nation's footballers showed that rugby wasn't the only sport that mattered in New Zealand when they qualified for the World Cup in 1982. It was just their fourth qualification attempt and, under English-born manager John Adshead, the national team overcame big rivals Australia in the first round, then China in a second round play-off to join group winners Kuwait in Spain. Drawn in a very tough group with Brazil, Scotland and the Soviet Union, the All Whites lost all three games as expected but gave a respectable account of themselves. National legend Steve Sumner went down in history too as the first-ever Oceanic player to score at a World Cup.
