In what was just their second participation in the competition, the Democratic Republic of Congo (or Congo Kinshasa as they were also known) surprised the continent with their victory at the 1968 African Cup of Nations. DR Congo came through their group in second place with victories over Congo Brazzaville and Senegal, then overcame the tournament hosts Ethiopia in the semi-finals. Facing them in the Final would be Ghana for the second time in the competition with the Ghanaians having previously won their group stage encounter. The Congolese were considered underdogs but raised their game to win by the narrowest of margins thanks to a goal by Kalala Mukendi and a man of the match performance by midfielder Kidumu Mantantu.
