With the opportunity to win the East German Oberliga off limits to any club but BFC Dynamo, runners-up spot was the best that the rest could realistically aspire to in the 1980s. Lokomotive managed this 1986 and 1988 and had the bonus of their three domestic Cup successes in the same era - in 1981, 1986 and 1987.
