If the 1976-77 season was a memorable one for Bastia, the one that followed was better still. A third-placed League finish in 1977 took Bastia into the UEFA Cup with no-one imagining the Corsicans might progress all the way to the Final. This was the club's debut season in European club competition after all. The Yugoslav maestro Dragan Džajic had departed but his great skills were more than adequately replaced by Dutch international Johnny Rep. With a supporting cast that included French international midfielders Jean-François Larios and Claude Papi with dependable sweeper Charles Orlanducci behind them, Bastia swept past opposition from England, Italy, East Germany, Portugal and Switzerland before losing out to PSV Eindhoven over the two-legged Final.
