The 1987-88 season was a forgettable one for Arminia Bielefeld, as the club struggled with financial problems. It affected the club in many different ways. The team struggled to score goals while trying to recover from relegation to the Oberliga Westfalen after finishing bottom of the league. Matthias Westerwinter’s five goals were enough to make him the club’s top scorer. Not even the efforts of the returning veteran Norbert Eilenfeldt, nor experienced Stefan Majewski could lift the club’s fortunes. Arminia quickly went through three coaching changes, before making an appointment that proved to be one of their best ever: that of manager Ernst Middendorp. Whilst Middendorp couldn’t save the club from relegation, he would start to put together a bright young team that would return to the 1. Bundesliga in the 1996/1997 season.
