A merger of two of the city's existing clubs in 1964 created FC Zaanstreek and three years later this new club was merged again with fellow Eerste Divisie neighbours and rivals, the more established Alkmaar '54, to AZ’67. This ultimately led to AZ and later to great success that would firmly establish both club and city on the football map.

The architects of these changes were the Molenaar brothers, both former footballers who had built a successful electrical goods chain after their playing days were over. AZ’67 kicked off its new existence at the start of the 1967-68 season in the Eerste Divisie and immediately vindicated their existence by finishing second and earning promotion to the top flight.
