Beerschot rounded off the 1970s with a second Belgium Cup success of the decade at the climax of the 1978-79 season. Prospects did not look great after a 3-1 home defeat in the semi-final first leg against Anderlecht, but the Antwerp club turned it round in the second leg to progress.

In the Final they narrowly overcame Club Brugge by a single goal, the Haitian striker Emmanuel Sanon setting up Johan Coninx for the winner early in the second half. The most influential player on the day and throughout the run was the skilful midfielder Juan Lozano, the son of Spanish parents who migrated to Belgium for work. Lozano would later star for Real Madrid.
