The quarter of a century that followed the end of the Second World War represented a barren era for Belgian football in the international arena with the notable exception of 1954, a year which turned out to be a highly memorable one for the Red Devils. The nation successfully qualified for that year?s World Cup in Switzerland and performed well with a team that featured a couple of the best forwards the Belgian game has produced in Henri Coppens and Jo Mermans. Coppens featured amongst the scorers in a thrilling 4-4 draw with England which many commentators at the time suggested was the nation?s best-ever result. A 4-1 defeat to Italy in their second group game meant Belgium would not progress in a tournament that was ultimately won by West Germany, the same West Germany that later in the year Belgium would play and defeat in a Brussels friendly to claim the title of ´unofficial world champions´.
