The 1965-66 season saw Nantes continue to make great progress under legendary coach José Arribas and his famous ‘jeu à la nantaise’ style of play which made the Brittany club such an attractive side to watch.

Champions for the first time in their history the previous year, Nantes duly retained their title this season edging out Bordeaux on goal difference thanks to an emphatic 6-1 away win at Cannes on the final day. The shining star of the campaign was forward Philippe Gondet who scored an incredible 36 League goals, a record total for a season at the time and still the third highest-ever in French history today.

Nantes could have made it a historic double season but suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to RC Strasbourg in the final of the Coupe de France.
