The Ligue 1 success enjoyed by Nantes in 1980 was the climax of an extended run as France’s dominant club. The Bretons had been champions in 1977 and after two successive seasons occupying the runners-up spot, the return of the trophy to the north west in 1980 was very welcome indeed. This title win came with a strong Argentinian flavour: in attack Victor Trossero scored 13 goals and was the team’s main goal threat alongside home-grown talent Éric Pécout and Gilles Rampillon. Oscar Muller in midfield and Enzo Trossero in defence brought different qualities but each proved highly effective too. There was a musical footnote to this title win a couple of months later in July 1980 when football-mad Bob Marley was scheduled to perform at the club’s La Beaujoire stadium. The reggae singer and talented footballer donned a Nantes shirt and captained his Wailers team in a 5-a-side pre-concert match against a selection made up of Nantes first team players.
