Former 1960s Nantes legend Jean-Claude Suaudeau stepped up to take charge of his former club in the summer of 1982 following a nine year spell in charge of the club’s youth sections.

It would prove to be an inspired appointment with Suaudeau having been responsible for bringing through many members of this talented first-team squad in the first place. Nantes comfortably won the Division 1 title with the most prolific attack and meanest defence in the division.

Established defensive stars like Maxine Bossis, William Ayache and Patrice Rio made Nantes a formidable opponent to score against, while at the other end wingers Loïc Amisse and Bruno Baronchelli and attacking midfielder José Touré ran riot. The main goal threat however came from the deadly Yugoslav striker Vahid Halihodžic who hit 27 goals in 36 appearances to finish as Division 1’s top scorer.
