Under former long serving player Raynald Denoueix turned coach, Nantes achieved notable success with Coupe de France wins in both 1999 and 2000. The 2000-01 season would bring even greater reward as the Canaries finished four points clear of Lyon to win a first League title in six seasons.

This success was very much driven by fine teamwork rather than star individuals:

Mickaël Landreau was the experienced keeper who brought calm and professionalism to the team while newcomer Stéphane Ziani impressed in midfield alongside the creative Eric Carrière. The team’s main attacking thrust and goals came from Oliver Monterrubio and the Romanian Viorel Moldovan.
