With Utrecht's much-loved former coach Han Berger returning to the club in 1987, not even a subsequent modest 10th-placed Eredivisie finish and KNVB Cup elimination to lower division TOP Oss could dampen supporter enthusiasm. Berger's playing career in the city with the old Velox club had been cut short at a very young age and he immediately threw himself into youth coaching with FC Utrecht. Such an impression did he make that at the age of just 25 he was entrusted with first team duties and soon set about proving the gamble the club had taken in appointing him was a smart one. Over the next seven seasons Berger led Utrecht to the top six on a regular basis, peaking with a club best third-placed finish in 1981 - a golden era that brought three successive seasons of European football. His second-coming in 1987 didn't quite live up to expectations and Berger's second spell only lasted for two largely forgettable seasons.
