The second half of the 1980s was a difficult and turbulent time for Fulham, as the club dropped into the lower reaches of the third tier of the English League. Under the guidance of young manager Ray Lewington, the 1988-89 campaign showed promise by taking the Cottagers into the play-offs, but the 1989-90 season witnessed a notable decline. Throughout much of the season, the Fulham squad found itself embroiled in a relegation battle. The eventual 20th-placed finish was just a point and a place ahead of Cardiff City in the relegation zone. Clive Walker and Gordon Davies fought hard to score the goals needed to secure Fulham's position, and Walker ended the campaign as the club's top scorer.
