Grimsby kicked off the 1984-85 season on a high following the 5th placed finish in Division 2 the previous season, just two places outside the promotion zone that would have taken the club back to the top flight for the first time since the 1940s. The Mariners lost influential veteran Chris Nicholl and prolific up and coming forward Kevin Drinkell, so this season proved a tougher one that still brought a very respectful 10th placed finish with Paul Wilkinson taking over as the team’s main goal threat. The season’s highlight was a run to the Quarter Finals of the League Cup that included a famous 1-0 win away at Everton, the club that went on to become English champions.
