The early years following the end of the Second World War were the greatest in the history of Hibernian Football Club. Key to their extraordinary success was the 'Famous Five', a brilliant and prolific front line starring Smith, Johnstone, Reilly, Turnbull and Ormond.

This front line played together for the first time in 1949 and in 1951 inspired Hibs to win the League title with a 10 point margin to spare. The 1951-52 campaign was another successful one and the Edinburgh side retained their title with a four point advantage over Rangers.

No other club came close to the 92 League goals the Hibees put away that season with Lawrie Reilly leading the way individually in scoring 27 of them.
