Finally Nigeria started to show its enormous footballing potential towards the end of the 1970s. Strong performances at the 1976 and 1978 African Nations Cup saw the Super Eagles finish in third place each time, so as the country prepared to host the 1980 edition hopes were high that bigger and better lay ahead. Home advantage would indeed prove invaluable and the team captained by Christian Chukwu duly won the African Nations Cup for the first time in Lagos. The Nigerian team finished unbeaten in its group ahead of Egypt, then overcame Morocco 1-0 in the semi-finals with a goal by the left winger Felix 'Owo-blow' Owolabi. Algeria stood between the hosts and the trophy but nerves were settled by an early second minute goal from Segun Odegbami. The forward would finish the tournament as joint top scorer and he added a second before Mudashiru Lawal sealed the victory with a decisive third in the second half. A less-heralded contribution came from the Nigerian goalkeeper Best Ogedegbe who was excellent throughout the competition and was rightly named in the team of the tournament.
