The 1977-78 season proved to be a watershed in the modern history of Preussen Münster. With strong financial backing over a number of years from president Günter Wellerdieck, ambitions were wholly focused on a return to the Bundesliga that the club had graced on just one occasion, fifteen years earlier. Under the promising new leadership of young coach Werner Biskup and with Klaus Wolf a regular scorer throughout the season, Münster maintained a challenge near the top of the 2.Bundesliga before finishing third - a point behind second-placed Rot-Weiss Essen who qualified for the promotion play-off at their expense. Fans at the Preussenstation would not come as close to seeing top-flight football again. Financial issues blew up during the summer of 1978 causing Wellerdieck to leave and the club to drift from the keen competitiveness it had shown through much of the decade.
