Rapid Wien was a club on a mission at the start of the 1988-89 season as it set out to secure a trio of successive Austrian Bundesliga titles for the first time in its storied history. Those ambitions were to fall short however as this was the season that marked the brief rise of Swarovski Tirol to the summit of the Austrian game. For a Rapid side under the new stewardship of Croatian coach Vlatko Markovic, a repeat of those championship wins of 1987 and 1988 rarely looked likely. Die Grün-Weissen finished their fall campaign in fifth place and improved slightly in the Spring campaign to fourth, 10 points adrift of their Innsbruck rivals. With 14 goals, the reliable and consistent Croatian striker Zlatko Kranjcar was Rapid's main attacking threat in that first half of the season, a role taken over in the spring campaign by the newly-arrived Heimo Pfeifenberger who added 10 of his own. Both players benefited enormously from the service provided by the precocious creative talent of the fast-developing Andreas Herzog.
