Benfica virtually defined the European Cup during the 1960s and when their fine team overcame the Italian champions Juventus in the semi-finals of the 1967-68 campaign, this meant a fifth European Cup Final appearance of the decade for the Lisbon giants.

Their opponents at Wembley were Manchester United, a talented side but inexperienced at this rarefied level. The English club took the lead in the second half before Jaime Graça equalised for Benfica with 15 minutes remaining. A great chance to win the Cup was passed up in the final moments as Eusébio ran clear on goal only to have his shot blocked brilliantly by United keeper Stepney.

Extra-time brought disappointment for the Eagles as Manchester United scored three unanswered goals to win the tournament for the first time.
