The decade immediately following the end of the war proved a successful one for VfB Stuttgart. A dominant force in the Oberliga Sud, die Roten won their regional division on three occasions and twice - in 1950 and 1952 - carried their good form all the way through the championship play-offs to emerge as national champions.

Much of this success was inspired by the famous figure of Robert Schlienz, a prolific centre forward for the club until he lost an arm in a car accident in 1948. He feared his career might be over but managed to successfully reinvent himself as an influential inside forward.

DFB-Pokal wins in 1954 and 1958 brought further silverware to the club and under long-serving coach Georg Wurzer, Stuttgart approached the start of the 1958-59 season hoping to end the decade on a high note. This season proved to be less memorable than recent campaigns as Stuttgart finished in fifth place, 17 points adrift of the runners-up position needed to advance into the play offs.

This was a team built around players like goalkeeper Gunter Sawitzki and forwards Erwin Waldner and Rolf Geiger. The veteran Schlienz was still there too in what would be his penultimate season with the club.
