The disappointment of losing an FA Cup semi-final the previous season was quickly forgotten as a charismatic new manager in Ron Atkinson continued to take West Brom in a forward looking direction for the 1978-79 season. This stylish team caught the eye before the season started with a groundbreaking tour of China and during the season itself with its attractive football and numerous goals. This was a team most strongly symbolised by the talented trio of Cyrille Regis, Brendan Batson and Laurie Cunningham, but there was talent throughout the side with Tony Godden, Alistair Brown, Derek Statham, Len Cantello and the forceful midfield play of Bryan Robson inspiring the Baggies to a third placed finish in Division 1. This represented Albion’s best finish since the late 1950s and this exciting season was capped by a strong UEFA Cup run eventually brought to an end by Red Star Belgrade.
