Having spent the previous season in a Director of Football role at the club, in 1997 Graham Taylor took the reins for his second spell in charge as manager at Watford, taking over from another Watford legend Kenny Jackett who moved into a coaching role. In his first season back Graham guided the Hornets to the second division title with 3 points to spare after a season-long battle with Bristol City.
Along the way in perhaps the most notable performance of the season, wearing the AC Milan inspired red and black striped away kit, was the 4-0 defeat of Luton at Kenilworth Road. Goals from Richard Johnson, Dai Thomas and a brace from Peter Kennedy gave Watford their biggest victory over local rivals Luton in the club’s history.
