1998-99 saw Watford gain their second successive league promotion and reach the Premier League for the first time. A 5th placed finish, secured with 7 wins from the last 8 games, saw Graham Taylor’s Hornets into the Championship play-offs.
After beating Birmingham City on penalties in the Semi-Final, Watford faced a fancied Bolton Wanderers side in the Wembley showpiece Final.
Two former Carlisle United players proved to be the matchwinners in a commanding performance. Nick Wright opened the scoring on 38 minutes with a spectacular overhead kick, then Scottish forward Allan Smart came on as substitute and sealed the win on 89 minutes with a deserved second goal.
